Performance support is the integration of electronic job aides and "knowledge" with software applications. The objective is to improve user performance by providing our clients with what they need, when they need it, where they need it.
Performance support is primarily used to:
- Teach new users to perform a task.
- Remediate experienced users on a task or function they use infrequently.
- Assist users with performing complex tasks that have a known set of variations.
Effective performance support is easy to access and context-specific. Some software programs have performance support built into the user interface and "coach" users through a procedure or process using a series of prompts. This is referred to as "intrinsic" support.
We primarily create "extrinsic" performance support for applications that do not have support designed into the user interface. Extrinsic support is created externally and is opened from the application.
GhostWriters has expertise in creating three different types of performance support tools:
- QuickCards: Online "recipe cards" that contain concise instructions for performing a specific task.
- Demos: Online "movies" that show a user how to perform a task in a software program.
- Online Help: Information provided in the Windows help format or in a Web format.
Regardless of the method used, the benefits of performance support include reduced training time, reduced hotline calls, and increased user confidence.
